Honorary Professor at the University of Buckingham Anthony Gliss stated that signs of a conflict can be observed in the modern world, which historians in the future may call World War III. He mentioned this in a comment to the Daily Mail.
According to the historian, one of the key signs of such a war is the so-called "wars of choice" - when states engage in armed conflicts not for self-defense, but for political reasons. Gliss believes that future researchers may consider February 24, 2022 - the date of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine - as a possible starting point for a global conflict.
The second sign the expert mentions is the disregard for international law and the spread of the principle that "might makes right." In his opinion, this logic was also observed before the major world wars of the 20th century, when aggressive regimes ignored international agreements and attacked neighboring countries.
The third factor Gliss identifies is the unwillingness of political leaders to quickly resolve armed conflicts. On the contrary, prolonging hostilities and expanding their scale can lead to the involvement of an increasing number of states.
The historian noted that the current international situation has dangerous parallels with events at the beginning of the 20th century, which ultimately led to World War I and World War II. According to him, it is this combination of factors that may eventually allow historians to say that a global conflict has already begun.
