In western Switzerland, a bus caught fire on Tuesday, resulting in at least six deaths and five injuries, three of which are serious, reports LETA citing AFP.

A fire broke out in a bus while it was on the main street of the town of Kertzers in the canton of Fribourg, approximately 20 kilometers west of Bern.

Videos are circulating on social media showing several-meter-high flames erupting from the bus windows, with black smoke rising into the sky.

"The police are currently treating the fire as an incident caused by a person, and even as intentionally set," said Fribourg canton police sergeant Frédéric Papo, without providing further details.

At a press conference, the police did not comment on possible theories, including suicide or a terrorist act. The prosecutor's office has launched a criminal investigation "to establish the exact circumstances of the tragedy," the Fribourg police reported.

"Emergency services arrived at the scene and found the vehicle fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters conducted rescue and extinguishing operations. A security perimeter was established," the police statement said.

Three seriously injured individuals were taken to the hospital. Two people with lighter injuries received assistance on-site and did not require hospitalization.
