The Head of the European Council, Antonio Costa, believes that the only winner of the war in the Middle East at this moment is Russia.
According to the news agency Reuters, he stated this while addressing European ambassadors in Brussels.
"So far, there is only one winner in this war — Russia. It is gaining new resources to finance its war against Ukraine as energy prices rise. It benefits from the diversion of military capabilities that could otherwise be directed to support Ukraine," he said.
Costa warned that Moscow is also benefiting from the decreased attention to the front in Ukraine as the conflict in the Middle East comes to the forefront. He emphasized the need for all parties to return to the negotiating table.
"Freedom and human rights cannot be achieved through bombs. They are only protected by international law. We must avoid further escalation. Such a path threatens the Middle East, Europe, and other regions," he warned.
As reported by Mignews, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky previously stated that the focus has shifted from the Ukrainian front to the Middle East due to the operations of the U.S. and Israel in Iran and retaliatory strikes from the Islamic Republic against Gulf countries.
He warned that this could lead to a reduction in military aid to Ukraine, particularly for air defense resources.
