A man detonated an explosive device near a police patrol car in central Moscow on Tuesday morning, killing one police officer and injuring two others, while he also died in the explosion, LETA reports citing AFP.
The explosion occurred around 0:05 on Tuesday (23:05 on Monday Latvian time) at the Savelovsky Station square, according to a statement from the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs published on the Telegram app.
Savelovsky Station in northern Moscow is one of the main railway hubs of the Russian capital.
The explosive device detonated when a man approached traffic police officers who were in a patrol car. The vehicle sustained significant damage but did not catch fire.
The scene was cordoned off by the police, and several ambulances were dispatched to the location.
Initially, the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that the bomber had fled. However, he was soon found dead during the examination of the scene and the review of surveillance footage.
Authorities did not provide detailed information about the explosive device or the bomber's motives. The Investigative Committee of Russia announced the initiation of a criminal case for attempted murder of a police officer and illegal possession of explosives.
In December 2025, two police officers were killed in an explosion in southern Moscow while attempting to detain a suspicious individual near their vehicle. This occurred not far from the location where a general of the Russian army had been killed a few days earlier.
Tuesday marks four years since Russia's renewed invasion of Ukraine. During this war, several officials of the Russian army have been killed on Russian territory.
