Mass riots in Mexico - drug lord El Mencho killed

The world's most wanted drug lord, Mexican El Mencho, has reportedly been killed during a Mexican special forces operation. Mexican intelligence services, according to media reports citing sources, eliminated Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known by the nickname El Mencho. He is the most influential drug lord in the country and one of the most wanted criminals on the planet. Previously, the U.S. State Department offered a reward of $15 million for any information leading to his arrest.

Details of the operation are not disclosed. One anonymous source told the media that the drug lord was killed during a vehicle check at one of the checkpoints in Puerto Vallarta (Jalisco state, Mexico). The federal police and the Mexican Marine Corps participated in the pursuit.

In the wake of the news of El Mencho's death, riots erupted in at least six states. In Jalisco state, Mexican media report that a state of emergency has been declared. A "red code" has been activated to protect the population, and roads have been blocked.

The U.S. Embassy in Mexico City advised American citizens in Jalisco not to leave their homes or shelters until further notice.

El Mencho was the most influential drug lord after the arrest of Joaquín Guzmán, known as El Chapo, in 2016.

Previously, U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to attack Mexican drug cartels. Against this backdrop, the Mexican government intensified its campaign against them, seeking to show the White House that it is serious about stopping the flow of illegal substances into the United States.
