The bill provides for a complete ban on access to social media for children under 13 years old.
In Portugal, teenagers will be able to start having sex earlier than they can create an account on social media, reports BBC.
The country's parliament has approved, in the first reading, an initiative that raises the 'digital age' for independent access to social media and a number of online platforms to 16 years, while the age of sexual consent in the country is 14 years.
The bill provides for a complete ban on access to social media for children under 13 years old, while access for those aged 13 to 16 will only be allowed with the permission of parents or teachers, using a digital key system to verify age.
In addition, the bill stipulates fines of up to 2 million euros for companies that own social platforms and do not comply with the new requirements.
