Georgia will return to the path of democracy, which is supported by the majority of the Georgian people, said Estonian Ambassador to NATO Yuri Luik.
Georgia was a beacon of democracy – seeing Georgian democracy collapse and Russian influence grow stronger is very bad for Georgia and the Georgian people, but it is also very bad for the entire region, said Estonian Ambassador to NATO Yuri Luik in an interview with Independence Avenue Media, as quoted by a Georgian resource.
He expresses hope that Georgia will return to the path of democracy, which is supported by the majority of the Georgian people.
"The Black Sea region, especially now, considering the situation with Russian aggression against Ukraine, is one of the key strategic regions. And it is obvious that the situation there is complex for many reasons. NATO, of course, does not have free access to the Black Sea due to the Montreux Convention. Therefore, NATO countries around the Black Sea bear enormous responsibility, including Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria, and they are essentially doing everything possible. It is clear that the situation around the Black Sea should be viewed in a broader regional context.
Indeed, agreements and arrangements between Armenia and Azerbaijan have led to very positive dynamics in the region and generated a lot of hope. And if we look at the future of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations, especially considering the positions of the leaders of both countries, [Armenian Prime Minister Nikol] Pashinyan and [Azerbaijani President Ilham] Aliyev, it seems that everything is moving in the right direction. I must again give credit to President Trump and his administration, who did a great job bringing the two countries with a complicated history together at the negotiating table. So let's see how it all turns out, but there is hope.
As for Georgia, for me, this is particularly a sad story. I have always considered myself a staunch supporter of democratic Georgia. I have been to this country many times. I have collaborated there with the Ministry of Defense of Georgia, and seeing Georgian democracy collapse and Russian influence grow stronger and stronger is very bad for Georgia and the Georgian people, but it is also very bad for the entire region because Georgia was a beacon of democracy there. Georgia was a country that gave hope to other countries. But I certainly hope that Georgia will return to the path that, I believe, is supported by the majority of the Georgian people – the path of democracy," said Yuri Luik.
