According to the statistics from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the number of active residence permits in France exceeds 4.5 million, which is the highest figure in recent years.
The General Directorate for Foreigners in France (DGEF) published a report for the past year, according to which the number of residence permits issued in 2025 increased by 3.2% compared to the previous year. A total of 4.5 million residence permits are currently in effect in the country, which is a record figure in recent years.
As reported by International French Radio, this growth is primarily driven by long-term resident cards and multi-year residence permits.
Nearly 60% of all residence permits are held by nationals from ten countries. Among the foreign population legally residing in France, Algerians are in the first place (over 658,000 people), followed by Moroccans (621,000), Tunisians (312,000), and Turks (232,000). The number of nationals from Congo and Côte d'Ivoire increased by 8% in 2025 compared to 2024.
