Travel for citizens of the South Caucasus country is limited by financial factors.
Georgia ranked 33rd in the international ranking of the strongest passports, Passport Index-2026. Holders of the document can enjoy visa-free travel or simplified border crossing with 133 countries around the world.
"Echo of the Caucasus" asked social media users in which countries they have traveled with a Georgian passport.
Georgy: "I have been to many countries with a Georgian passport. In Bulgaria, Germany, Austria, Poland. My wife has been to Spain, Italy, Germany, and my daughter has traveled almost all over Europe; it’s easier to list the countries she hasn’t been to. Today, traveling for Georgian citizens has become very easy; there’s no need to plan a year in advance. There are discounts on airline tickets from low-cost carriers; you buy a ticket and fly, no need to suffer through obtaining visas, standing in lines for hours and days at embassies, only to find out later that you are denied a visa. Therefore, it would be very bad if we lose the visa-free regime with the EU because of our authorities. Those who say that it’s not a big deal if there’s no visa-free regime and that life will go back to how it was, getting visas, in my opinion, have not traveled beyond Russia."
Lika: "I have hardly been anywhere; traveling around Georgia is very expensive, and trips to other countries involve huge costs. I am very surprised by people who complain that life is hard here, yet they are constantly traveling. I know that we have a visa-free regime with more than 100 countries – that’s very good, and I also hope that one day I will be able to travel, and I don’t think anything will prevent me from doing so except for my financial situation. I don’t think the European Union will reinstate the visa regime."
Sandro: "I have been to many countries; I’ve traveled to almost 80% of Europe. I’ve been many places with my family on vacation, but I mainly travel for work. To be honest, I just realized that I have never traveled to countries that require a visa. We have become so accustomed to this comfort – the visa-free regime with the EU – that returning to the past may seem terrible. It would be very bad if we lose the ability to move freely in the EU – it would be bad for the economy, for development, and of course, it would affect many things."
Gocha: "I believe that as long as a person is alive and healthy, they should travel and see the world. I travel to different countries three times a year. I relax somewhere, return to Georgia, and immediately start planning a new trip. The last time, in October of last year, I was in Italy; now I’m planning a trip to Greece. I’m not a materialist; for me, the emotions I get from visiting different countries are more important. I’m lucky that many of my friends, with whom I travel, think the same way. I believe there’s no point in buying expensive things; I’d rather spend all my money on trips than on phones and watches, which seems meaningless to me."
Elene: "I haven’t been anywhere for a long time. Many years ago, I went to Turkey. Here, it’s not just about the 'strength of the passport'; people travel abroad if they have the financial means. All of this is not designed for the masses. Yes, we have a 'strong passport,' but to use it, you need money. And I don’t know how long it will remain so strong, as we are threatened with losing the visa-free regime. I believe that Brussels should act as the Georgian people deserve. For diplomatic passports, many countries have already canceled the visa-free regime. As for ordinary citizens – the EU constantly says that they support us, so they should know that in such situations, the visa-free regime cannot be canceled.
