IEA: Gas supplies from Russia to the EU will drop by 33 billion cubic meters from 2025 to 2028.
From 2025 to 2028, supplies of Russian gas to the European Union, both pipeline and liquefied natural gas (LNG), will drop by a total of 33 billion cubic meters. This forecast is contained in a report by the International Energy Agency (IEA).
The main reason for this trend will be the refusal of the countries of the union to cooperate with Moscow in gas supplies due to the ongoing hostilities in Ukraine. In 2026, according to the IEA forecast, pipeline supplies will decline by 2-3 billion cubic meters, while LNG will decrease by 6-7 billion after regasification.
In 2027, the decline will be 5-6 billion cubic meters for pipelines and 20 billion in the form of LNG, and in 2028, it will be 13 billion and 20 billion cubic meters, respectively.
In October of last year, the EU Council approved a plan for the phased abandonment of Russian gas in the region starting January 1, 2028. The signing of new gas contracts is prohibited from January 1, 2026, and short-term contracts must be completed by July 17, 2026. Long-term contracts must be completed last. Additionally, the import of LNG under short-term contracts is prohibited starting April 25 of this year, and for long-term contracts, it is prohibited from January 1, 2027.
