Trump Changed His Mind About Imposing Tariffs on Eight European Countries That Did Not Want to Gift Him Greenland

U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he has formed the basis for an upcoming agreement on Greenland during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

He announced this on his social network Truth Social.

Trump wrote that thanks to agreements with Rutte, he does not plan to impose tariffs against European countries.

The U.S. President did not provide details of the agreement but noted that it would be "wonderful" for the United States and NATO.

"Based on the very productive meeting I had with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, we have formed the basis for a future agreement on Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic region. This decision, if implemented, will be wonderful for the United States of America and all NATO countries," Trump wrote.

He noted that discussions are ongoing regarding the "Iron Dome" – the U.S. missile defense system that is also supposed to cover Greenland.

The negotiations for the agreement will be led by U.S. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, Trump wrote.

Recall that on January 17, Trump announced the introduction of tariffs against several countries that disagree with his position on Greenland.

According to him, starting February 1, 2026, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland will be subject to a 10% tariff on all goods exported to the U.S.

Starting June 1, 2026, the tariff will be increased to 25%, he added.
