Three are dead, 23 people are in the hospital, and more than ten injured individuals have been quarantined after contact with the unknown substance, according to the Associated Press.
Initially, rescuers and medics received a call about a drug overdose. Upon arriving at a private home east of Albuquerque, they found four people unconscious, three of whom soon died. While working at the scene, police officers, firefighters, and medics began to complain of nausea, dizziness, coughing, and vomiting.
Twenty-three people were hospitalized after contact with the substance; they underwent decontamination and examination. Doctors were prohibited from taking clothing and belongings that they had at the scene.
The University of New Mexico Hospital reported that a total of 23 individuals were examined. Most have already been discharged, several patients remain under observation, and two emergency service workers are in serious condition.
Authorities emphasize that the substance has not yet been identified. It is preliminarily believed that it was transmitted through contact rather than by air. An investigation is ongoing.
