EU Freezes Trade Agreement with the US Amid Trump's Threats

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and US President Donald Trump signed a trade agreement in Scotland in July 2025.

The European Parliament has suspended the consideration of the document and postponed the vote on this issue. As reported by Euronews, European lawmakers decided to freeze the trade agreement between the EU and the US, which was concluded last summer.

This move came after Donald Trump's threats to impose new tariffs against European countries that are actively opposing the US president's claims to Greenland.

Such a step would contradict the terms of last year's deal, although it has not formally come into effect yet, as it requires approval in the European Parliament.

Next week, a vote was scheduled in the committee on international trade, which has now been decided to be postponed.

Numerous amendments were being prepared for the document: last year's agreement was already labeled unfair, as it provides for a 15% tariff on European imports to the US and 0% on American imports to Europe.

On Thursday evening, leading EU politicians are set to meet and prepare a unified response from the bloc to Trump's threats, which many view as a form of blackmail.
