On January 22, U.S. Special Envoy Whitcoff will meet with Putin in Moscow at the initiative of the Russian side. Earlier this week, the Americans held talks with Putin's special representative Dmitriev in Davos.
U.S. Special Envoy Steven Whitcoff and Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner will meet with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Moscow on January 22. Whitcoff announced this to CNBC on Wednesday, January 21, as reported by Reuters.
"We will have a meeting with him (with Putin - Ed.) on Thursday. The Russian side has requested the meeting. I think they will make an important statement," said Whitcoff. According to the U.S. president's representative, on January 21, before departing for Russia, he will also meet with the Ukrainian side.
The words of Trump's representative about the meeting with Putin were confirmed by the press secretary of the Russian president Dmitry Peskov. "Yes, indeed, such contacts are scheduled for tomorrow in the president's agenda," he told RBC.
In Davos, Whitcoff and Kushner met with Dmitriev
Whitcoff and Kushner will travel to Moscow from Davos, Switzerland, where the World Economic Forum (WEF) is taking place from January 19 to 23. There, the American side held a meeting on January 20 with Putin's special representative for investment and economic cooperation Kirill Dmitriev. Whitcoff, as reported by the Russian state agency RIA Novosti, described these negotiations as "very positive."
Media reported on Whitcoff's new trip to Moscow in mid-January
On January 14, Bloomberg reported, citing sources, that Whitcoff and Kushner were considering a trip to Moscow to meet with Putin. It was noted that the meeting could take place this month, but the plans are not yet final, and the timing may shift due to the unstable situation around Iran.
At that time, Peskov, commenting on this news, stated that dialogue with the American side is ongoing and expressed hope that the visit of U.S. representatives to Moscow would take place "as soon as the dates are agreed upon."
Since the beginning of last year, when Trump returned to the White House, Whitcoff has met with Putin six times. The last negotiations took place on December 2 in Moscow.
