Vatican and US Discussed Possibility of Asylum for Maduro in Russia - Media

On the eve of Christmas, the Secretary of State of the Holy See, Pietro Parolin, summoned US Ambassador Brian Birch, demanding detailed information about Washington's plans regarding Venezuela.

This was reported by The Washington Post.

It is specified that the Deputy Pope asked whether the US would only pursue drug traffickers or if the Trump administration was indeed seeking regime change in Venezuela.

Parolin acknowledged that Nicolás Maduro must go, but urged the United States to offer him a way out.

According to documents obtained by the newspaper, for several days the cardinal attempted to gain access to Senator Marco Rubio, seeking to prevent the destabilization of the situation in Venezuela. In a conversation with Birch, Parolin stated that Russia was ready to provide asylum to Maduro. He also urged Americans to be patient, nudging the Venezuelan leader towards this offer.

"Maduro was offered to leave and enjoy his money. Part of this offer was that Putin guarantees him safety," said a source familiar with Moscow's proposal.

The Vatican condemned the publication of information regarding Parolin's offer to the American side.

"It is disappointing that fragments of a confidential conversation were made public, which inaccurately reflect the content of the conversation that took place during the Christmas period," the Vatican press office told The Post.
