U.S. President Donald Trump, who a few days ago threatened to conduct a military operation against Colombia, accusing it of smuggling cocaine into the U.S., after a phone call with the president of this South American country, Gustavo Petro, stated that he invited him for a meeting at the White House, LETA reports citing DPA.
On his social platform Truth Social, Trump wrote that Petro called to explain "the situation regarding drugs and other disagreements."
The President of the United States noted that he "appreciates his call and tone" and looks forward to welcoming Petro to the White House in Washington.
For his part, Petro reported that he spoke with Trump for about an hour. "Without dialogue — there is war," he said at a rally in support of Colombia's sovereignty, adding that now Colombia "can sleep peacefully."
Petro also noted that in his first conversation with the U.S. President, he discussed issues related to neighboring Venezuela and drug trafficking. Peace in Venezuela would mean peace in Colombia, Petro said, adding that he provided Trump with data on his country's successes in the fight against drugs and advocated for direct communication between Washington and Bogotá.

As previously reported, on Sunday Trump threatened Colombia, accusing it of smuggling cocaine into the U.S. and not ruling out the possibility of a military operation by Washington against the country.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on the way from Florida to Washington, Trump described Colombia as a "very sick" country and stated that it is run by "a sick person who likes to produce cocaine and sell it to the U.S."
"He won't be doing this for very long," Trump said, without specifying what he meant.
Earlier, Trump had already sharply criticized Colombia's leftist President Petro, but this time he did not mention him by name.
In response to a reporter's question about whether the U.S. would conduct a military operation against Colombia, Trump said, "That sounds good."
As part of his drug strategy, Trump recently stated that he does not rule out strikes on drug production labs in Colombia, which Petro interpreted as a threat of invasion. Washington has also imposed sanctions against Petro.
As previously reported, during a military operation on Saturday, the President of neighboring Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife were captured. They were taken to New York, where they face trial on criminal charges related to drug trafficking to the U.S.
