U.S. President Donald Trump threatened Colombia on Sunday, accusing it of smuggling cocaine into the U.S. and not ruling out the possibility of a military operation by Washington against the country, LETA reported citing AFP.
Speaking with reporters aboard Air Force One en route from Florida to Washington, Trump described Colombia as a "very sick" country and stated that it is run by a "sick man who likes to produce cocaine and sell it to the U.S."
"He won’t be doing this for very long," Trump said, without specifying what he meant.
Previously, Trump had made critical statements about Colombia's leftist President Gustavo Petro, but this time he did not mention him by name.
When asked by a reporter whether the U.S. could carry out a military operation against Colombia, Trump replied, "That sounds good."
As part of his strategy to combat drugs, Trump recently stated that he does not rule out the possibility of striking drug production labs in Colombia, which Petro condemned as a threat of invasion. Washington has also imposed sanctions against Petro.
As previously reported, during a military operation, the U.S. captured the president of neighboring Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife on Saturday. They were taken to New York, where they face trial on criminal charges related to drug trafficking to the U.S.
