Prime Minister Nielsen: Greenland is open to dialogue but demands respect from the U.S.
Greenland is open to dialogue with the U.S., but in a respectful manner and without threats of annexation. This was stated by the island's Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen on the social network Facebook.
In his post, Nielsen noted that communication should take place through the proper channels and with respect for international law, rather than as random and disrespectful posts on social media. Earlier, he harshly commented on a post made by the wife of Deputy White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, Katie. In the post, the island was colored in the colors of the American flag, and Katie accompanied it with the phrase "coming soon."
He reminded that Greenland has considered itself a loyal friend of America for many generations, but the alliance must be built on trust, "and discussions of annexation are unacceptable for friends." Nielsen believes it is wrong for Trump to associate the phrase "we need Greenland" with the situation in Venezuela following U.S. military intervention.
"No more fantasies about annexation," emphasized the Prime Minister, calling Washington's rhetoric unacceptable.
American leader Donald Trump stated that Greenland is "absolutely essential" for the United States. Shortly before these statements, the U.S. special envoy to Greenland, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, assured that Washington does not intend to conquer the island's territory.
