Colombian President Gustavo Petro ordered the deployment of military forces to the border with Venezuela on Saturday following US strikes on Caracas, which, according to US President Donald Trump, resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, reports LETA citing AFP.
Petro characterized Washington's actions as an attack on the sovereignty of Latin America and stated that a humanitarian crisis is possible.
Although the President of Colombia called for resolving the crisis through dialogue, he also announced on platform X that he ordered to "deploy security forces" at the border with Venezuela.
On social media, Petro added that measures have been introduced to "maintain stability at the border."
The President of Colombia did not comment on Trump's statements about the capture of Maduro, despite Venezuela being one of Colombia's closest allies in the region.
Earlier, Petro demanded an immediate convening of a meeting of the Organization of American States (OAS) and a UN decision on the issue of "international legal assessment of US aggression."
Colombia is a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council this year, thus calling for a meeting of this body.
Petro criticized Trump's orders to deploy military forces in the Caribbean region to combat potential drug trafficking.
According to an AFP agency reporter, the situation remains normal at the main border crossing point between Colombia and Venezuela.
Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez stated that security forces have activated "all capabilities" to prevent "any attempts of terrorist attacks" at the border from illegal groups such as the National Liberation Army.
As part of his anti-drug strategy, Trump recently stated that he does not rule out the possibility of strikes on drug production laboratories in Colombia, which Petro condemned as a threat of invasion.
