In Poland, there are plans to create a metropolis five times larger than Warsaw

In Poland, the idea of creating a metropolis whose area will exceed that of London and whose population will be more than two million people has received political support, writes LETA, citing TVP.

The area of the proposed metropolitan agglomeration in the southwest of Silesia will be nearly 2,500 square kilometers, with a population of 2.1 million people. In comparison, the area of London is only 1,572 square kilometers.

The new agglomeration will be five times larger than Warsaw. Currently, the area of the Polish capital is 517 square kilometers, with a population of 1.86 million people.

The project was developed by scientists from the Silesian University and has received support from the mayor of the largest city in the region, Katowice, Marcin Krupa.

The new metropolis will unite 41 cities and towns into one administrative unit, including Katowice, Sosnowiec, Gliwice, and Zabrze.

"One city as the final stage of integrating all municipalities of the metropolis is my dream," Krupa admitted in an interview with the newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza.

The authors of the project note that the united city will allow for more efficient resource use, coordination of development policies, improved quality of life for citizens, and strengthened economic positions in Silesia.

At the same time, opponents of the idea argue that smaller municipalities may lose control over local priorities and lose the identity of their surroundings.

Several possible names for the new metropolis have already been proposed, including "Metropolis," "Silesia," and "New Katowice." The final name will be chosen by citizens in a referendum.
