The Polish consulate in Brussels was defaced with red paint and vulgar inscriptions directed against the European Union, reports LETA citing TVP.
The entrance and facade of the Polish diplomatic institution were covered with paint and slogans containing the word "murderers" and vulgar comments directed at the EU border agency Frontex, calling for open borders.
The spokesperson for the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed the state news agency PAP that on Thursday, slogans of a clearly political nature appeared on the facade of the consular section of the Polish embassy in Brussels, directed against the security of Poland and the EU.
An unnamed consulate employee told Polish radio station RMF FM: "It looks like a Russian provocation, but it could be anything. It is done to sow chaos and uncertainty. This is part of broader efforts."
According to the employee, the incident may be related to the ongoing migration crisis at the Polish-Belarusian border.
Warsaw and Brussels have long believed that the crisis is orchestrated by Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko to destabilize the EU, which is why Poland has strengthened security and infrastructure at the border.
RMF FM reports that surveillance cameras captured a group of three to four people defacing the building. It is reported that the Belgian police plan to increase their presence in the area.
The incident occurred on the same day that EU leaders in Brussels discussed the continuation of funding for Ukraine's defense against Russia, as well as plans for a trade agreement between the EU and the South American economic bloc Mercosur.
Negotiations over a possible deal sparked protests from European farmers in the Belgian capital: during the demonstrations, they clashed with police and caused damage to EU buildings.
The graffiti and paint from the facade of the Polish consulate have already been removed, and the Belgian police are investigating the incident.
