The Ukrainian delegation concluded a meeting with representatives of the USA and the EU in Miami, said Rustem Umerov. Further negotiations between the USA and Russia will follow, writes DW.
The Ukrainian delegation, headed by the head of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) of the country, Rustem Umerov, has concluded negotiations in Miami with representatives of the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. Umerov announced the end of the meeting, which took place locally on Friday, December 19, on his Telegram channel.
Umerov did not provide details of the discussions but noted that "European partners" of Kyiv were also present at the meeting. "We concluded the meeting in the USA with American and European partners. Following it, I informed the President of Ukraine. We agreed with our American partners on further steps and the continuation of joint work in the near future," wrote the NSDC head.
Before the trip to the USA, Umerov emphasized that in Miami the parties would discuss the developments that were mentioned during the meeting of the delegations of Ukraine and the USA in Geneva on November 23. These, in turn, were based on the so-called "Trump plan for Ukraine."
Following Ukraine, representatives of the Russian Federation are heading to Miami
On December 20 and 21, a delegation from Russia is expected in Miami, headed by the special representative of the President of Russia, Kirill Dmitriev. He will also hold negotiations with the special representative of the U.S. President, Steve Witkoff, and Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner.
Witkoff and Kushner held negotiations with the Ukrainian delegation in Berlin on December 14 and 15, which was also attended by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky. As a result of these meetings, the American side promised to provide Ukraine with security guarantees in case of the end of the war waged against it by Russia.
Putin continues to demand the return of Donbas
One of the main sticking points in the Trump plan, according to media reports, was a clause implying the actual transfer of territories in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions that have not been captured by Russia. This was insisted upon at the meeting in Berlin by Kushner and Witkoff, who are well-received by Moscow, as noted by AFP agency.
Amid discussions of the document, demands for the transfer of territories have been openly and frequently voiced by the Kremlin. Russian President Vladimir Putin combines these demands with threats to seize Ukrainian regions by force if Kyiv does not fulfill his wishes. During his "direct line" on December 19, the Kremlin chief again mentioned these territorial ambitions.
Ukraine, for its part, as stated by Volodymyr Zelensky a few days ago, will not recognize Donbas as Russian either de facto or de jure. According to the Ukrainian leader, the USA is "seeking a compromise" on this issue.
