Since the resumption of armed clashes at the border between Cambodia and Thailand on Sunday, hundreds of residents from border areas have been evacuated, the governments of both countries reported on Wednesday, LETA writes, citing AFP.

According to the Public Relations Department of Thailand, by Tuesday evening, 180,125 people had been evacuated from the provinces of Ubon Ratchathani, Sisaket, Surin, and Buriram.

Later, the Ministry of Defense of Thailand reported that the total number of evacuees in the country during the border clashes had reached 400,000 people.

In Cambodia, according to the spokesperson for the country's Ministry of Defense, Mali Sochata, by Tuesday evening, 20,105 families — a total of 101,229 people — had been evacuated from five border provinces.

Since the resumption of hostilities, seven Cambodian civilians have been killed, and another 20 have been injured, a representative of the Ministry of Defense reported on Tuesday.

The Thai army, in turn, stated on Tuesday that since Sunday, one soldier had been killed and another 18 had been injured during the fighting.

Both sides accuse each other of reigniting the clashes. On Monday, Thailand began airstrikes and deployed tanks against the neighboring state.

The conflict is rooted in centuries-old disputes over borders drawn during the French colonial rule in the region. Both countries claim a number of temples in the border area.

In October, Thailand and Cambodia signed a peace agreement.

The agreement, brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump, was aimed at achieving long-term peace following the July clashes at the border between Thailand and Cambodia, which resulted in at least 43 deaths and more than 300,000 civilians on both sides being forced to leave their homes.
