At least four people were killed in a mass shooting at a restaurant during a children's birthday party on Saturday evening in Stockton, Northern California. Ten others were injured.
Local police report that among the victims are both adults and children. The condition of the injured has not yet been disclosed.
The suspect is still at large, and police believe he may have acted "purposefully."
The San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office stated that the shooting occurred shortly before 6:00 PM local time and urged anyone with information, video recordings, or who witnessed any part of the incident to contact the police.
According to police spokesperson Heather Brent, the investigation "is being conducted very actively and continues," but there is currently little information about what happened.
"Initial data suggests that this may be a targeted crime, and investigators are exploring all possible scenarios," she said.
Stockton Mayor Christina Fugazi called the shooting unacceptable: "Families should be together, not in the hospital, standing next to their loved ones and praying for them to survive."
California has some of the strictest gun laws in the U.S., but they have been challenged in federal courts in recent years.
