Modern conflicts are already occurring in space, and the next wars will begin there, French President Emmanuel Macron stated on Wednesday, noting the threats posed by Russia and announcing an increase in spending for military operations in space, LETA reported citing AFP.
“Today’s war is already taking place in space, and tomorrow’s war will begin in space,” said Macron at the new French space military command center in Toulouse.
“Space is no longer a sanctuary; it has become a battlefield,” Macron stated.
He pointed out that Russia has been conducting espionage activities in space following its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Russia is monitoring French satellites with its spacecraft, there is widespread jamming of GPS signals, and cyberattacks on space infrastructure, he added.
Macron also highlighted “particularly shocking Russian threats of nuclear weapons in space, the consequences of which would be catastrophic for the entire world.”
Macron announced an additional funding of €4.2 billion for military operations in space by 2030.
