Mamdani's Islamic faith incites hatred among conservatives.
U.S. President Donald Trump called the elected mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, a communist and stated that residents will leave the city when he becomes mayor. This was reported by Al Jazeera.
The head of the White House threatened to deport Mamdani and even seize the metropolis. Opponents of the elected mayor believe he wants to turn New York into a "Muslim paradise ruled by jihadists." He will take office on January 1, 2026.
Earlier, Trump promised after Mamdani's victory that he would not allow the construction of communism in the U.S.
Mamdani was born on October 18, 1991, in Kampala, the capital of Uganda. He comes from a Ugandan-Indian Muslim family. His mother is Mira Nair, an Oscar-nominated director, and his father is Mahmood Mamdani, a professor at Columbia University.
At the age of five, he moved with his parents to Cape Town, and two years later ended up in New York, where he graduated from high school. In 2014, he graduated from Bowdoin College in Maine with a bachelor's degree in African studies. He later defended mortgage debtors from eviction.
He rapped about social issues. The music video for his song Nani featured Indian-American actress, cookbook author, and television host Madhur Jaffrey.
In 2018, Mamdani became a U.S. citizen. In early 2025, he married Syrian-American artist Rama Duwaji.
The future mayor of New York is a Twelver Shia, a follower of the largest branch of Shia Islam. He supports the English football club Arsenal, the New York Giants (American football), and the New York Mets (baseball).
Mamdani is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). In November 2020, he was elected to the New York State Assembly. He became the first Ugandan and the third Muslim ever to be a member of this body.
In the summer, the politician ran in the DSA Democratic primaries and unexpectedly defeated Cuomo, who was considered the favorite. As a result, the former governor of New York ran as an independent candidate.
During the election campaign, Mamdani actively used social media, which helped him gain support among younger voters. In particular, on TikTok, he addressed "people of color" voters, speaking in Bengali, Spanish, and other languages. Additionally, he recorded a video of his jump into the cold ocean to discuss the need for a rent freeze.
