The design of the submarines began even before the large-scale war in Ukraine.

The authorities of the United Kingdom plan to build four Dreadnought-class nuclear submarines at the Barrow-in-Furness shipyards over the next 15–20 years, writes the Financial Times.

The construction of four new nuclear submarines will take place at the shipyards in Barrow-in-Furness, according to a report by the Financial Times.

This program is being implemented with the participation of defense contractor BAE Systems, which intends to complete the work within 15–20 years.

After the construction of the Dreadnought-class submarines is completed, plans are in place to begin the creation of up to 12 AUKUS-class attack submarines, intended for patrolling the North Atlantic sea routes from the late 2030s, the publication notes. The Barrow shipyards have already begun preparatory work.

It is known that in November 2023, Babcock Corporation signed two contracts totaling £121 million with the British government and BAE Systems for the development of Dreadnought-class nuclear submarines. The new submarines will replace the existing Vanguard-class boats in the early next decade.

As reported by the media, back in 2018, Prime Minister Theresa May allocated $850,000,000 for the creation of a new generation of nuclear submarines, the Dreadnought.

British engineers previously presented the concept of a high-tech warship called 'Dreadnought 2050'.

According to the design, the ships will be constructed from ultra-rigid acrylic composites. Thanks to state-of-the-art materials, the ship's hull can become transparent if desired, allowing the crew to see through the hull, which will be useful in close combat and maneuvering, writes The Telegraph, which published sketches of the 'dreadnoughts'.

On the outside, the hull may be coated with graphene, which will reduce drag and thereby increase speed and reduce fuel consumption.

Engineers propose to equip the ships with ballast tanks that, when filled, will lower the ship into the water, making them less detectable and more difficult to hit with enemy weapons.
