On Monday, a shootout occurred in the Mexican state of Sinaloa between police and members of a drug cartel, resulting in the deaths of 13 criminals, LETA reported citing AFP.
Four more suspects were detained. Police also managed to free nine people kidnapped by this cartel.
The armed confrontation took place in the municipality of Guasave, reported Security Minister Omar Garcia Harfuch on social media.
According to him, armed bandits hiding under a bridge attacked police officers during a patrol. The police returned fire.
After the shootout, seven vehicles, heavy weaponry, and tactical gear were confiscated, the minister added.
In the state of Sinaloa, an armed conflict between factions of a powerful drug cartel has been ongoing for more than a year. At least 1,700 people have been killed in this wave of violence, including 57 minors, and about 2,000 are reported missing.
The internal war in the cartel began after the arrest of its historical leader Ismael Zambada, known as "El Mayo." He was turned in and handed over to the U.S. in July 2024 by the son of a former partner — Joaquin Guzman.
