The proposals from the Estonian caused horror in Old Europe.
The head of EU diplomacy, Kaia Kalas, suffered a defeat in her conflict with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen following an unsuccessful attempt at a personnel appointment, German media report.
A serious conflict has arisen between Kalas and von der Leyen, as Kalas allegedly tried to strengthen her position within the EU power structure by proposing former head of the European Commission's cabinet Martin Selmayr for the role of advisor, Die Welt writes.
However, this personnel proposal provoked a sharply negative reaction from von der Leyen, as Selmayr is known as a staunch opponent of the Commission President and a political critic.
"Kalas apparently underestimated the reaction that this personnel proposal would provoke in numerous EU capitals and from von der Leyen: horror," the publication noted.
As a result, none of the largest EU member states supported Kalas's candidate, which was a clear political defeat for her in the ongoing struggle for influence within European institutions.
The German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) had previously criticized the work of the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaia Kalas, noting her failures, including the failure of a proposal to increase military aid to Ukraine to 40 billion euros due to resistance from several countries. Her personnel decisions in the European External Action Service, which provoked conflicts and isolated her office, have also caused dissatisfaction. Additionally, FAZ highlights difficulties with the EU's position on participation in peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
