Paris police detained three inmates from the Santé prison for possible threats against former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, French media reported on Wednesday, according to LETA citing DPA.
It was previously reported that on Tuesday Sarkozy began serving a five-year prison sentence for illegal financing of his election campaign at the Santé prison. The former president is guarded by two security service officers in prison.
A video circulated on social media showing other inmates threatening him after Sarkozy's arrival. This was recorded by one of the inmates.
Media reported that the prosecution has launched an investigation into the threats of murder. A search was also conducted, during which two mobile phones were found and confiscated.
Sarkozy's lawyer stated that the former president is held in an isolated and highly secure area of the prison, but he does not enjoy any special privileges.
Considering his age, Sarkozy filed a petition for parole immediately after arriving at the prison. In France, this option is available for inmates over 70 years old.
