The President of Madagascar Fled the Country

Madagascar's President Andry Rajoelina fled the country after several weeks of protests, French media reported on Monday, according to LETA citing DPA.

In an evening video address broadcast live, the president stated that he had to move to a safe place to protect his life.

According to the French radio station RFI, on Sunday, Rajoelina was evacuated from Madagascar aboard a French military plane by agreement with French President Emmanuel Macron.

Rajoelina, who obtained French citizenship in 2014, did not disclose his current whereabouts.

The broadcast of his video address was repeatedly delayed after armed forces occupied the state television building. Technical difficulties also affected its airing.

The president did not announce a possible resignation but urged citizens to respect the existing order.

Madagascar has been engulfed by a wave of protests involving tens of thousands of young people. The reasons include disruptions in electricity and water supply, dissatisfaction with the education system, high unemployment, and widespread poverty.

As peaceful demonstrations turned into violent clashes, at least 22 people have died.

On Sunday, Rajoelina's office condemned the attempted coup. One of the army units stated that it had taken control of the country's land, sea, and air forces. Many military personnel joined the protests.

After rumors of the president's flight emerged, his administration claimed on Sunday that Rajoelina was in a bunker at the presidential palace.
