Reappointed as Prime Minister of France, Sébastien Lecornu presented the composition of the new government on Sunday evening, the Élysée Palace reported, according to LETA citing DPA. The Prime Minister is working under increasing pressure as he is expected to stabilize power and adopt a critically important state budget.

Several key ministerial portfolios remain in the hands of the previous ministers.

Lecornu retained Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot and Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin in their positions. The new Minister of Economy and Finance, Roland Lescure, who was appointed just a week ago, also remains in his post.

Former Labor Minister Catherine Vautrin will become the Minister of Defense — a position previously held by Lecornu himself.

The new Minister of the Interior is Laurent Nuñez, the prefect of the Paris police.

President Emmanuel Macron will participate in a summit on the Gaza sector in Egypt on Monday, so he will be outside the country on this important day for France.

Lecornu was reappointed as Prime Minister on Friday, just a few days after his resignation. He must form a new cabinet by Monday to present the draft budget for 2026 on the same day after the government meeting.

If this deadline is not met, France may start the new year without an approved budget, which would further complicate the already tense financial situation in the country.

Several opposition parties announced their intention to submit a vote of no confidence even before the new government was announced, while other parties noted that their decision would depend on whether Lecornu promises a change in political course.

It remains unclear whether the Prime Minister will withstand these challenges. A vote of confidence may take place as early as Thursday.
