Hollywood actor Robert De Niro has once again sharply criticized U.S. President Donald Trump. During a protest concert in New York, the 82-year-old artist stated that he can no longer speak of love for his country while it is led by the current head of state.
The event was organized by the Committee for the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees freedom of speech and freedom of assembly.
Speaking to those gathered, De Niro compared the current attitude towards the country to the behavior of a domestic violence victim.
"Our country is not very appealing right now. I don’t want to say this, but expressions of love for our country sound like the words of an abused spouse claiming she loves her abuser," the actor stated.
According to De Niro, he cannot support a government that, in his opinion, engages in "stupid and inhumane wars," denies people access to healthcare, and acts in the interests of the political elite.
In conclusion of his speech, the actor called Donald Trump a "racist, misogynistic, and xenophobic tyrant."
"I cannot love a country that is led by Donald Trump and a sycophantic Congress," De Niro emphasized.
The event also featured other notable figures from American culture, including actresses Jane Fonda and Julia Roberts.
This is not the first time that celebrities have publicly spoken out against Trump’s policies. Earlier, actor Richard Gere referred to the American president as a "crazy man" during a speech in Berlin.
Despite his advanced age, Robert De Niro continues to be actively involved in public life, although he appears in films significantly less often. In recent years, the actor has been dedicating a lot of time to his family. In 2023, he welcomed a daughter, Gia Virginia — the seventh child of the actor. Her mother is martial arts trainer Tiffany Chen, with whom De Niro has been in a relationship since 2015.
