As We Age, the Digestive System Works Differently: Gastroenterologists Offer Important Advice

As we age, the digestive system begins to work more slowly, which can cause heartburn, bloating, pain, and other unpleasant symptoms. Doctors explained what changes occur in the body after 50 and when gastrointestinal issues require consulting a specialist.

As the body ages, the digestive system gradually slows down, which can lead to various unpleasant symptoms. This is reported by HuffPost, citing gastroenterologists Salem Attalla and Samit Sohi.

According to the specialists, age-related changes affect the muscles and nervous system of the gastrointestinal tract. As a result, food moves through the digestive tract more slowly than in youth. This slowdown can be accompanied by heartburn, increased gas production, stool disturbances, and painful sensations in the abdominal area.

Doctors also note that chronic diseases and certain medications can negatively impact the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract. In particular, among the possible risk factors, they mentioned ibuprofen and other anti-inflammatory drugs.

To reduce the severity of unpleasant symptoms, specialists recommend thoroughly chewing food, maintaining adequate fluid intake, and more frequently including plant-based foods in the diet while reducing the amount of ultra-processed food.

Additionally, regular physical activity and sufficient sleep lasting from seven to nine hours per day have a positive effect on digestion.

At the same time, experts emphasize that any digestive disturbances should not be automatically attributed solely to age. If symptoms persist for a long time, worsen, or are accompanied by other alarming signs, it is necessary to consult a doctor. In some cases, such manifestations may indicate more serious diseases.

Although age does indeed affect the functioning of the digestive system, many unpleasant symptoms can be alleviated through proper nutrition, adequate physical activity, and a healthy lifestyle. However, persistent discomfort, pain, or digestive disturbances require consultation with a specialist and should not be ignored.
