We discuss what to do if vipers have appeared on your property.
In spring, there is always a lot to do in summer cottages. However, in addition to work, many encounter the appearance of snakes. While grass snakes and smooth snakes pose no danger, vipers can cause concern. But they should never be killed — let’s figure out why.
To kill or to spare
Snakes are not social creatures. They do not seek interaction with humans and prefer to avoid encounters. The presence of vipers on your property indicates that something has attracted them. What could that be?
Mice and other rodents. If there is a lot of wildlife on your property, it becomes a good hunting and feeding ground for snakes.
The presence of a pile of junk or construction debris that has not been cleaned up for a long time can also serve as shelter for a snake.
Killing a living creature is inhumane, especially since vipers do not attack first. These reptiles even help summer residents by exterminating rodents that can damage crops.
How to deter the guest?
Do not create conditions for snakes to coexist: remove the trash and junk where they can hide. Keep your property tidy and get rid of rodents by cultivating the soil and plants. This is important to do regardless of the presence of vipers, as rodents can carry dangerous diseases. Getting a cat will also help deal with mice, depriving the snake of its food source.
Do not chase away hedgehogs — they are less dangerous to humans but can help in the fight against vipers. Do not destroy their burrows and do not scare them when you encounter them.
Ecologists claim that vipers prefer to settle near humans, especially in places where people rarely go. This is due to the absence of predators and the opportunity to bask in the sun.
What to do if you encounter a viper
Do not make sudden movements. Snakes are not aggressive unless disturbed. Calmly step back in the other direction, and the viper will slither away. When walking around the property, watch your step carefully to avoid stepping on a snake.
First aid for a snake bite
* To avoid an allergic reaction, take an antihistamine.
* Immobilize the bitten part of the body to slow the spread of venom.
* Seek medical help as soon as possible.
