Even Workouts Don’t Help: The Dangers of 10 Hours in a Chair

Prolonged sitting can seriously harm the body even in people who exercise regularly. This conclusion was reached by Samina Akhtar, a PhD student at the Aga Khan University in Pakistan.

Samina Akhtar, a PhD student at the Aga Khan University (Pakistan), warns that prolonged sitting poses serious harm to the body that cannot be fully compensated for even with regular exercise. Sedentary behavior directly affects metabolism and heart function.

The modern person spends up to 10 hours a day in a chair — at the office, in the car, or in front of a screen. Scientists are alarmed: new data confirms that the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases increases proportionally to the time spent sitting.

When we sit for long periods, the leg muscles — the largest consumers of glucose — are virtually inactive. This slows blood flow and reduces the effectiveness of enzymes that break down fats in the blood. As a result, blood sugar levels rise, and blood vessels begin to suffer from stagnation. This happens unnoticed, but the consequences accumulate over the years.

Many believe that an hour of evening exercise erases the harm of an eight-hour workday in a chair. However, Akhtar notes that this is not the case. Metabolic disturbances caused by "sitting hours" persist. Exercise is beneficial, but it is not an "antidote" to prolonged immobility.

The good news is that the harm can be minimized. Scientists recommend taking short breaks every 30–60 minutes. Simply standing up, stretching, or walking down the hallway for five minutes is enough. Such micro-breaks "wake up" the metabolism and prompt muscles to actively process sugar and fats again.

Scientists urge employers to change workplace culture: implement standing desks and encourage short walks. This will not only preserve employee health but also increase their productivity. In the fight against "sedentary disease," the main weapon turns out to be not intense running, but constant, albeit light, activity throughout the day.

According to the editorial team, the main danger of a sedentary lifestyle lies in its inconspicuousness: a person may consider themselves active, go to the gym, but still spend almost the entire day without movement. Research increasingly shows that for health, not only workouts matter, but also regular activity throughout the day.
