Constant fatigue after sleep, chills, and muscle pain in the morning may not just be a result of overexertion but signs of hypothyroidism—one of the most common thyroid diseases. Experts warn that the disease often develops unnoticed and long masquerades as other health problems.

One of the most common thyroid gland pathologies is hypothyroidism, which often goes unnoticed for a long time due to its similarity to other diseases. This condition is characterized by a decrease in thyroid function and a sharp reduction in hormone production, leading to a slowdown of all processes in the body.

Main Morning Manifestations of Hypothyroidism

Experts emphasize three key morning symptoms that may signal hypothyroidism and require a doctor's consultation:

  • Constant fatigue after sleep, where it is difficult to get out of bed even after waking up.

  • Pain, aches, or cramps in the muscles that occur without prior physical exertion.

  • Chills that do not disappear even in a warm room.

Additional Symptoms and Features of the Course

Other characteristic signs of hypothyroidism include:

  • Apathy, lethargy, a tendency towards laziness;

  • Drowsiness during the day;

  • Decreased reaction speed;

  • Weakened immunity and frequent colds;

  • Memory impairment and difficulties in absorbing new information.

"Patients feel cold in any weather, their movements slow down, their face takes on a bluish tint, and their skin becomes dry. Another symptom of hypothyroidism is brittleness and significant hair loss. Advanced hypothyroidism negatively affects appearance: the face becomes swollen, eyelids swell, and the corners of the mouth droop," the study states.

An important diagnostic criterion is also body temperature. Specialists recommend measuring it every morning for 10 days. If the readings are below 36.5°C, it may indicate hypothyroidism.

Swelling in hypothyroidism can occur not only in the legs, eyelids, or hands but also in unusual areas of the body. For example, swelling of the throat or tongue may occur, leading to changes in voice, or of the ears, which can provoke otitis.

Doctors remind that hypothyroidism can seriously affect the functioning of the entire body, so alarming symptoms should not be ignored, writes bb.lv. Timely examination and monitoring of thyroid hormone levels help detect the disease at an early stage and avoid complications.
