Epidemiologist and RAS academician Gennady Onishchenko detailed how to timely recognize this extremely dangerous bacterial infection that threatens both adults and children.
Recently, there has been a troubling rise in meningitis cases in the country. This dangerous disease causes inflammation of the meninges, which requires immediate attention.
The first alarming signals should be the appearance of a rash and a sharp increase in blood pressure accompanied by a high fever. Epidemiologist and RAS academician Gennady Onishchenko specified: “These also include headaches and loss of consciousness, as the meninges have become inflamed.”
Although the disease is transmitted through the air, its contagiousness is significantly lower than that of the common flu. Nevertheless, many people mistakenly take this dangerous infection for a regular ARVI or flu in the early stages.
Academician Gennady Onishchenko emphasizes the critical importance of early diagnosis. He is convinced: “We need to enhance monitoring, that is, to detect the disease at early stages.”
