As part of the study, specialists conducted an experiment: 20 volunteers went on a sea cruise under the supervision of experts. Participants were given smartwatches with an application to monitor their bodily functions. The devices recorded heart rate, activity level, and movement patterns.
The head of the study, James Petrik, noted that the effects of vacation can be compared to interval training in athletes. According to him, during the trip, the heart responds to new experiences in the same way it does to short bursts of physical activity, while periods of relaxation ensure complete recovery. This alternation, as the scientist emphasized, contributes to strengthening the heart muscle.
The research, based on the cognitive-activation theory of stress, showed that travel expands the body's adaptive capabilities, increases resilience to stress and pressure, strengthens social connections, and promotes personal development.
The main conclusion of the study is that a week-long vacation reduces stress levels more effectively than a short three-day trip. However, the exact threshold after which the effect may diminish has not yet been established. Scientists suggest that too long a stay outside the usual environment could yield the opposite result. Overall, vacation is seen as an important biological mechanism for maintaining the normal functioning of the body.
