April weather often plays hide and seek with us: today the sun caresses, and tomorrow the frost pinches. But don’t worry! There are true heroes among vegetables that not only fear such whims but also become stronger because of them.
April is an unpredictable month. Sometimes the sun shines warmly, other times a cold wind suddenly blows in, and occasionally nighttime frosts can remind us of their presence. That’s why spring planting should be approached wisely, choosing those green inhabitants of the garden beds that are unfazed by the whims of the weather. We have prepared a list of truly resilient vegetables that will easily withstand the spring chill and delight you with a great harvest.
Five Vegetables That Are Not Afraid of Frost
Potatoes
Don’t rush to postpone planting potatoes! As early as the first days of April, confidently plant early varieties, and by mid-month, switch to the main ones. This root vegetable is a true champion of survival: it feels great even in cool and damp spring weather. An important nuance: ensure good drainage to avoid tuber rot from excess moisture. And even if sudden frosts damage the first sprouts, don’t panic! Just mound the potatoes, and they will shoot up again with renewed vigor, continuing their growth. Moreover, potatoes handle sharp temperature fluctuations and heavy rains excellently.
Kale
Perhaps kale is one of the most indestructible vegetables that can be safely planted in April. It is unfazed by heat, cold, biting winds, or sharp temperature jumps. This trendy green loves cool weather and only starts to sulk when the thermometer exceeds +24°C.
Peas
Sweet peas are another spring favorite! They can be sown from the first warm days of spring until the arrival of summer. As soon as the soil warms up to a modest +7°C, feel free to get started. Carrots
Carrots are a real find for both novice and experienced gardeners! This crop is remarkably undemanding, and you can safely sow it as early as April. Imagine, even at minimal temperatures of +3…+5°C, the seeds are ready to sprout! And light spring frosts, contrary to fears, only harden the young shoots, making them stronger. Choose the sunniest spot in your garden for carrots, where the soil will be loose and non-acidic. Before sowing, you can soak the seeds a bit, and after the shoots appear, don’t forget to water regularly, thin them out, and, of course, loosen the soil.
Leeks
Elegant leeks are another resilient fighter! They are practically indifferent to the whims of the weather, and some particularly hardy varieties can even winter right in the garden bed. You should start sowing leeks when the soil warms up to +10°C. To ensure that the seeds wake up together and grow actively, remember to regularly and timely moisten the soil.
