Red wine and a light carpet is a risky combination: even a slight tilt of the glass can leave a noticeable stain. It is better not to delay cleaning, as the sooner you start treatment, the higher the chance of removing the stain without dry cleaning.
The main mistake is trying to rub the stain. This causes the coloring pigment to penetrate deeper into the fabric fibers. It is better to gently blot the area with a paper towel or napkin to absorb as much liquid as possible. It is also recommended to use cold water immediately: it loosens the pigment and prevents it from setting.
There are several home methods to deal with wine stains. One of the simplest is carbonated water: the bubbles of carbon dioxide help to push the dye out of the fibers. If it is not available, a saline solution can be made: salt partially draws out moisture and makes the stain less noticeable. Sometimes a mixture of vinegar and water or a baking soda solution is used. For light carpets, hydrogen peroxide with a small amount of dish soap is also suitable. Before applying any mixture, it is best to test its effect on an inconspicuous area of the covering.
After treatment, the area must be thoroughly rinsed with clean water to avoid streaks. Then the carpet should be dried well, as damp fibers collect dust and dirt more quickly. If action is taken quickly, the wine stain can usually be almost completely removed even without professional cleaning.
