Being a happy couple is not just about romance and bright emotions, but also about simple habits that strengthen relationships day by day. A new study shows that one such habit — going to bed at the same time — can have much more significance than you might think. We elaborate on this.

A New Perspective on the Evening Ritual of Happy Couples

As relationships transition from the initial stage to a more mature one, many couples notice that passion alone is insufficient to maintain a sense of closeness and happiness. A recent study conducted among approximately 2000 spouses or partners shows that a significant habit of happy couples is going to bed together.

Essentially, this is not about sex or intimate encounters, but rather a simpler yet emotionally significant act — going to bed at the same time. Researchers introduced the concept of "sleep gap" — a period when one partner is already asleep while the other is still awake. It turned out that couples who reduce this gap and regularly fall asleep together are more likely to rate their relationship as stronger and happier.

Why Sleeping Together is Important for Couples

Survey participants indicated that about 58% of couples feel closer when they go to bed at the same time. At the same time, roughly the same number of respondents believe that this ritual helps strengthen their bond and improve emotional intimacy.

Psychologists link this to several factors:

  • A shared schedule helps create a ritual for ending the day, which psychologically brings partners closer together;

  • The time before sleep is an opportunity to talk about the day’s experiences, discuss plans, and feel supported;

  • The absence of a long "gap" in sleep reduces feelings of loneliness and enhances the sense of safety next to a partner.

What Additional Habits Strengthen Relationships Before Sleep

Although the main focus of the study was on sleeping together, other experts note that couples also strengthen their connection through the following actions:

  • Communication and sharing about the day help exchange emotions and feel each other's support.

  • Putting phones and gadgets aside improves focus on the partner and reduces distractions.

  • Physical closeness — hugs, kisses, touches, or even simple communication without sex — enhances emotional connection and promotes relaxation before sleep.

  • The ability to end the day without grievances and heavy conversations helps maintain a positive mood and avoid accumulating tension.

These habits may vary among different couples, but they share one thing in common: they all strengthen emotional contact and help partners feel important to each other.

What Psychologists Say

Independent studies in the field of relationship psychology also confirm that similar or agreed-upon bedtimes are associated with higher levels of relationship satisfaction and emotional closeness. Social interactions during calm evening hours help couples feel heard and understood.

Moreover, family relationship experts emphasize the value of a daily small ritual of "accelerated synchrony": short conversations, expressions of gratitude, or discussions of future plans before sleep contribute to strengthening the bond and reducing stress.

...Happy couples do not necessarily spend hours on romance or elaborate rituals in the evenings. Often, what truly strengthens relationships are simple yet regular habits, such as going to bed at the same time and paying attention to each other before sleep. These actions foster emotional closeness, mutual understanding, and a sense of support, making relationships more resilient and harmonious.
