Brushing Teeth Reduces the Risk of More Than 50 Diseases

Scientists at the AAAS conference in Phoenix stated that regular oral hygiene and preventive visits to the dentist can reduce the likelihood of more than 50 diseases. This was reported by The Telegraph.

Research confirms the connection between dental health and arthritis, Parkinson's disease, and dementia. Bacteria residing in the oral cavity can provoke inflammatory processes and infections in various organs. In particular, periodontitis increases the risk of neurodegenerative diseases and accelerates the development of dementia in at-risk individuals.

Experts have found that pathogenic microorganisms from the oral cavity can cross the blood-brain barrier, exacerbating brain inflammation. Associate Professor Felipe Andrade noted the significance of gum diseases in the formation of rheumatoid arthritis. Professor Nobuhiro Kamada emphasized the impact of oral microbiota on the gut microbiome, which may increase the risk of inflammatory diseases and colorectal cancer.

Professor Aldogan Kantachi linked the rise in dental problems to the spread of sugary and ultra-processed foods. He advises brushing teeth two to three times a day, especially after consuming sweets. If there is an opportunity to brush teeth only once, it is better to do so before bedtime. For elderly individuals with motor impairments, the expert recommends using electric toothbrushes and thoroughly cleaning the tongue of bacteria.
