How 'folk' whitening methods destroy enamel — dentists' opinion

Popular methods of teeth whitening on social media using lemon, baking soda, or activated charcoal can have serious negative consequences for healthy enamel, dentists warn. Doctors describe such home methods as not only pointless but also potentially destructive to teeth.

Dentists are increasingly encountering patients who have tried to whiten their teeth using 'folk' recipes, such as lemon juice, baking soda, or activated charcoal. Specialists note that such methods can lead to enamel destruction and increased tooth sensitivity.

Lemon juice contains citric acid, which sharply lowers the pH level in the mouth and can cause demineralization of the enamel — thinning its protective layer. This makes teeth more vulnerable to cavities, the appearance of chalky spots, and painful sensations from hot, cold, or sweet substances.

Baking soda, while having a mild abrasive effect, can wear away the surface layer of enamel with frequent use, making teeth rough and predisposed to the accumulation of pigments from coffee, tea, or wine.

Activated charcoal, often advertised as a natural whitening remedy, also has drawbacks: its granules can get stuck in microcracks of the enamel, increasing wear and raising the risk of microcracks and surface defects.

Experts warn that such methods not only do not provide a lasting whitening effect but often lead to the need for expensive treatments. A much safer option remains professional oral hygiene, consultation with a dentist, and the use of certified whitening products.

...Doctors confirm: despite the popularity of internet hacks, using home recipes for teeth whitening can harm enamel and worsen oral health. To keep teeth healthy and white, dentists recommend trusting proven methods under the supervision of specialists.
