Urgently stop taking vitamin D if you notice these 4 dangerous symptoms

Vitamin D is essential for bone and dental health, a strong immune system, and normal heart function. However, an overdose can lead to dire consequences.

In the midst of our gloomy winters, taking vitamin D is essential for many. However, people often approach the process too zealously, taking large doses of the vitamin — so to speak, they do not skimp on trifles. The consequences of such "prevention" can be quite serious, even leading to death.

For instance, in the UK, a man died from hypercalcemia — an excess of calcium in the blood. It turned out that he had been taking high doses of vitamin D for nine months prior.

Hematology expert Tobias Mapulanga identified four alarming symptoms that warrant stopping vitamin D intake.

Frequent thirst and frequent urination

With an excess of vitamin D, the balance of fluid and salt in the body is disrupted, leading to constant thirst and frequent urges to urinate. If you notice this started after taking supplements, carefully examine the packaging of the products, drinks, and multivitamins you consume. Vitamin D is now often added to cereals, granola bars, gummies, protein shakes, collagen powders, and other products and supplements.

If you are constantly thirsty and frequently running to the bathroom, check your vitamin D levels and consult a doctor. Additionally, drink plenty of fluids — this will help your body eliminate the excess calcium.

Nausea, constant belching, and stomach upset

The expert advises choosing simple forms of cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) with minimal additives, as flavorings and sweeteners can often be sources of problems.

Moreover, vitamin D should not be taken on an empty stomach, as this fat-soluble micronutrient can lead to gastrointestinal upset when it enters an empty stomach.

"Food acts as a buffer for the supplement in the digestive system and minimizes irritation," the expert explains to the Daily Mirror.

If nausea persists, accompanied by abdominal pain and constipation, it may indicate excess calcium, which means it's time to urgently check your vitamin D levels.

Bone pain and muscle cramps

Excess vitamin D lowers vitamin K levels, making it harder for the body to regulate and absorb calcium. Hypercalcemia increases bone metabolism, reduces bone density, and causes pain.

Additionally, the absorption of minerals necessary for muscles is disrupted, which, along with dehydration, leads to cramps.

Clouded consciousness and headaches

Excess calcium in the blood can also affect overall brain function, causing issues with concentration, drowsiness, confusion, fatigue, and headaches. If malaise begins or worsens shortly after taking vitamin D supplements, be sure to consult a doctor.

Safe dose of vitamin D

Experts agree that 400 IU of vitamin D per day is sufficient for most people. If you have a deficiency of this vitamin, the dosage should be determined in consultation with a doctor.
