Today, sleep accessories with claimed health benefits are a real trend. There are models with memory foam, fillers shaped to the head and neck, products with buckwheat husks or lavender, as well as special options for sleeping on the side and stomach. It’s no surprise that marketers emphasize this: the "pillow market" is growing year by year.
But are all the options available really that good? Doctor Ekaterina Makarova explained what to focus on when choosing a pillow to truly promote deep sleep.
The specialist notes that many view the purchase of a pillow as an investment for many years. In reality, it is more of a consumable item that does not need to last for decades, and it can be changed, for example, every six months. Relying solely on advertising or others' reviews, you are unlikely to find the perfect option because comfort is very individual.
Why It's Important to Consider Sleep Position
The first thing the expert mentions is your primary sleeping position. The key criterion here is how well the pillow supports the head in a neutral, natural position relative to the spine.
"If you sleep on your stomach, the pillow should be as low as possible; on your back, it should be of medium height; and on your side, it should be high enough to fill the space between your shoulder and head. But the ideal level can only be determined through practice. What seems right on paper may not be suitable in terms of softness or firmness," Makarova explains.
Orthopedic Models and Memory Foam Effect
Modern orthopedic pillows with fillers that adapt to the curves of your neck and head seem like an obvious choice. However, this design does not always suit everyone.
For example, if you often toss and turn from side to side, memory foam can create a "dent" under your cheek, causing discomfort in the morning. Therefore, it is worth not only looking at the technology but also testing the product personally.
Attention to Scents
Makarova separately mentions pillows with scented herbs, such as lavender. Despite advertising promises of a relaxing effect, such scents can sometimes be too intense and may provoke headaches or interfere with falling asleep. Additionally, herbal fillers are often too firm, which reduces sleep comfort.
How to Choose Safely
If online selection raises doubts, head to a large shopping center with a sleep goods department. Sales consultants often allow you to "try on" the pillow: you lie down on it to feel if it is comfortable.
According to the expert, this is one of the most effective ways to understand if a specific model suits you. However, the final verdict will only come from a full night’s rest on the chosen pillow.
"Don’t be upset if your first purchase wasn’t perfect. It’s a valuable experience, and over time you will better understand which parameters are truly important for your sleep," the doctor concludes.
