7 Mistakes in Interior Design That Make It Hard to Clean Your Apartment

Sometimes the reason for the constant chaos at home is not laziness or lack of time, but the interior itself. Some solutions that seem stylish actually make cleaning endless. Below are the main design mistakes that keep the house in order only until the next day.

1. Too Many Open Surfaces

Open shelves, racks, and wall decorations look beautiful in photos, but in reality, they become magnets for dust.

If you want visual lightness, leave one open shelf and close the rest with flat-front cabinets.

Smooth surfaces are easier to wipe down and do not require constant cleaning.

2. Small Decor on Horizontal Surfaces

Candles, figurines, plants, diffusers – all of these create coziness but complicate cleaning. To dust, you need to remove dozens of items and then rearrange them again.

Optimal: group decor in 2–3 elements on a tray or stand. This looks tidy and saves time.

3. Complicated Textiles

High-pile rugs, velvet curtains, and fluffy throws make the interior cozy, but they collect dust and pet hair the most.

If you have pets or allergy sufferers at home, choose materials with short pile, dense fabrics, or easily washable covers.

4. Furniture Close to the Floor

Sofas and dressers without legs look solid, but you can't vacuum underneath them.

After a couple of months, a whole layer of dust collects there, which you can't reach without moving the furniture.

Tip: choose models with legs at least 10 cm high – a robot vacuum and a regular brush can easily fit underneath.

5. Glossy Surfaces and Dark Fronts

Glossy finishes and deep shades look impressive in catalogs, but in real life, they show fingerprints, dust, and even streaks from cleaning cloths.

If you're not ready to wipe down every door daily, choose matte finishes, especially in the kitchen and bathroom. They look just as stylish and do not require constant maintenance.

6. Lack of Storage Space

Even the cleanest apartment will seem cluttered if things are left out in the open.

The main rule: each category should have its own place. You don’t necessarily need to buy bulky cabinets – closed boxes, baskets, and modules with doors can help. The main thing is to keep all excess off open surfaces.

7. Light Fixtures with Complicated Shapes

Multi-level chandeliers, designer lampshades, and glass shades look striking, but dusting each detail is a real challenge.

In everyday interiors, it's better to choose simple shapes and smooth surfaces, especially if the ceilings are low.
