While popular European resorts suffer from an influx of tourists and summer heat, travelers are increasingly seeking lesser-known destinations. Experts from Lonely Planet have compiled a list of 13 picturesque places where one can enjoy nature, the sea, mountains, and culture without the crowds.

Against the backdrop of local residents' dissatisfaction with excessive tourism in some of Europe's most popular cities, as well as the hellish summer heat in southern regions, tourists are beginning to seek alternative vacation spots – where there are fewer people and it is not as hot.

Meanwhile, experts from the world's largest travel publishing company, Lonely Planet, have compiled a list of the 13 best secret places for summer vacations in Europe.

"Summer in Europe is an incredible time, whether it's enjoying a cocktail in a bustling Renaissance square or swimming in the deep blue waters of a Mediterranean beach. According to them, the best secret places for summer vacations in Europe cover everything from Spanish wine regions to the beaches of the Baltic Sea, from Arctic Norway to the Albanian Riviera.
