How to Cope with Post-New Year Blues and Melancholy

The holidays are over, and the feeling of apathy and fatigue afterward is a common phenomenon. Psychologists refer to this as post-New Year depression, and it can be addressed.

The hustle and bustle of December, deadlines, and a million plans are made bearable by the anticipation of the holiday and long vacations. But the holidays come to an end, and along with them, the expectation of magic is replaced by apathy and melancholy.

Why Post-New Year Melancholy Occurs

There are several reasons, including biological ones:

  • Alcohol. Champagne and other alcoholic beverages reduce the production of happiness hormones and increase cortisol levels.
  • Heavy Food. Mayonnaise salads create a feeling of heaviness and depression.
  • Disruption of Routine. Night outings and late wake-ups disrupt hormonal balance and cause fatigue.

Another important reason is overstimulation: the anticipation of the holiday, joy, and excitement exhaust the body, leading to a natural need for rest after the celebrations.

How to Recover

  1. Return to a Normal Routine. Go to bed and wake up on time, limit heavy food and alcohol.
  2. Take Care of Mental Health. Find reasons for joy: go for walks, meditate, read.
  3. Reading and Familiar Content. Watching and reading familiar things helps relieve stress and fatigue.

Remember, the first weeks after the holidays, apathy will gradually pass, and by February, life will return to being calm and measured.
