On Friday, January 9, the wind in Latvia will significantly strengthen, which in several regions will lead to the movement of snow — the so-called snowstorm or ground blizzard, meteorologists predict, writes LETA.
On Thursday, no significant precipitation is expected, and the eastern and northeastern winds will gradually strengthen — by evening, gusts in Latgale will reach 13 meters per second. The air temperature will average between -5 and -10 degrees.
On Friday, the wind will lift the snow cover across the country, in some places significantly. The most intense snowstorm is expected in Latgale, as well as in certain areas of Vidzeme and Kurzeme. There will be no precipitation, except in the south of Latgale, where snow is possible.
It is expected that the gusts of the northeastern wind on Friday will reach 13–18 meters per second, and on the Kurzeme coast near the Gulf of Riga — even 23 meters per second. On the night of Saturday, the wind will weaken only slightly, so in several places the snowstorm will continue.
The air temperature on Friday in most regions of Latvia will be between -7 and -12 degrees, in the north of Kurzeme — from -3 to -7. Such frost will persist on Saturday, when snow will fall in many places, but the wind will gradually calm down.
Next week, the air temperature in Latvia may drop below -20 degrees.
